NORTHUMBERLAND - Richard H. Strauser, 87, of 679 Queen St., died Friday morning, Sept. 17, 2004, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born in Shamokin on March 30, 1917, a son of the late Jacob and Jennie (Peters) Strauser. He married the former Mary "Ardie" Strauser on Aug. 12, 1937.

He graduated from Northumberland High School in 1935 and served in the United States Army in Germany during World War II.

Mr. Strauser was formerly employed as the manager of the paint department for the former Bottiger & Stuck Lumber Co., Selinsgrove. After his retirement he was employed part time at the Northumberland County Courthouse.

He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Northumberland.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 44, Northumberland; Sunbury VFW; Northumberland Fire Company #1; Northumberland Hook & Ladder Company; and the Selinsgrove Moose.

He enjoyed spending time at his cottage, which he built, on the north branch of the Susquehanna. He enjoyed boating on the river.

His hobbies included cooking and doing carpentry.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Ard R. Strauser of Northumberland, Robin D. Strauser of Albuquerque, N.M. and Murray K. Strauser of Sunbury; five grandchildren, Ardie, Matthew, Chad and Taylor Strauser and Kristin Tasker; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Christopher and Jenna.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Gilbert; and one sister, Dr. Ruth Strauser.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at the Sunbury Bible Church, RR1 Northumberland, with the Rev. James B. Gross officiating.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in River View Cemetery, Northumberland.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Refreshments will be served in the church social hall following the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to Christian Academy of the Sunbury Bible Church, RD1 Northumberland, PA 17857, or the Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library, 100 King St., Sunbury, PA 17801.

Notes for RAY E FLEMING:

A former Northumberland resident, Ray Edward Fleming, 82, died on Sunday, March 16, 2008.

He passed away at La Posada-Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, New Mexico after a period of declining health.

He was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Northumberland Pa., a son of the late William and Nettie Fleming.

Ray earned a Bachelors degree in History and Economics from Susquehanna University and a Masters Degree in Geology from the University of Oklahoma.

He was drafted into the Army in 1945 and served in World War II. Later he enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard and served two tours of duty in the Korean War.

In 1954, he met and married Margaret Zane, his wife of 43 years. In 1958, Ray and Margaret moved to Albuquerque N.M., where he worked for and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He moved to Las Cruces in 2001 to be near family.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Alice Fleming of Las Cruces, N.M.; two grandchildren, Michael Kingery and his wife Heather of Las Cruces, and Daniel Kingery and his wife Angela; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Kingery of Denver, Colo.

At his request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. His cremains will be interred at a later date.

The family is grateful to Mesilla Valley Hospice for the care given to Ray and suggest in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Ave, Las Cruces, NM 88005.

Arrangements are with La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home, 555 W. Amador Las Cruces, N.M.

William L. "Bill" Conrad, 85, a resident of the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, for the past five years, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008.

He was born Jan. 15, 1923, in Northumberland, a son of the late Ralph D. and Lydia (Fleming) Conrad. He was married on Oct. 3, 1969, to the former Ida L. Bickel Bergenstock, who survives. They celebrated 39 years of marriage.

A 1940 graduate of Sunbury High School, he served in the 99th Chemical Service Co. of the Army during World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal and the Victory Medal.

Bill was employed by the former Shippers Car Line, a division of ACF Industries in Milton, for 28 years before retiring in 1985.

He formerly attended St. Paul's United Church of Christ in West Milton, and he was a member of AARP.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. It gave him great joy to share the harvest from his garden with relatives, neighbors and friends. The Conrad family had a cabin near Weikert fondly named "Wipperwill" and enjoyed spending time there with family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, Ralph M. Conrad of Middleburg, one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Conrad, who died in infancy.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg, where the service will be held at 11 with the Rev. Patricia A. Bennett, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, West Milton, officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, New Columbia.

WALDORF, Md. - Mary Margaret Haupt, 86, formerly of Northumberland, Pa., died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Waldorf Health Care Center.

She was the last remaining child of the late Delilah and William Fleming of Northumberland. She and Bruce A. Haupt Sr. were married for 64 years before his death.

Mrs. Haupt worked as a bookkeeper most of her life.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed many years of sewing, playing the piano and card club with high school friends.

Surviving are her children, Bruce A. Haupt Jr. of Selinsgrove, Pa., William Haupt of Waldorf, Laura Benfer of Selinsgrove, Margaret Scholvin of Cochransville, Pa., and Kathleen Rowe of Bloomsburg, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington, Pa., by the Rev. Alfred Bashore.

CATAWISSA - Paul L. Mackey, 79, of RR3 Catawissa, died early Thursday afternoon, Dec. 16, 2004 in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he had been a patient since Monday. He had been in failing health for several years.

He was born Nov. 1, 1925 in Lewisburg, a son of the late Riley and Grace (Berge) Mackey. He married the former Mary Seaman, originally of Shamokin. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on April 10.

Paul served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a staff Sergeant, stationed in the European Theater. He was shot down on one occasion and smuggled back to the United States Line by the underground.

After the war, he went to work for Magee Carpet for 45 years, retiring in 1987.

Paul was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Numidia.

He was also a former member of the American Legion and the Magee Carpet Company Union.

Paul enjoyed building and race cars. He was an avid Southern football and wrestling fan and loved to help his children in whatever projects their homes needed.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Mary, are three sons, William S. Mackey and his wife, Wendy, of Sunbury, Robert R. Mackey and his wife, Karen, of Elysburg and David L. Mackey and his companion, Karen, of Harrisburg; one daughter, Linda A. Cox and her husband, Bill, of Elysburg; six grandchildren, Tara Mackey of Shamokin, Michael Mackey of Harrisburg, Bret Cox and his wife, Chris, of Elysburg, Andrea Cox of Harrisburg, Gail Javorka and her husband, Mark, of Wilkes-Barre and Jon Mackey and his wife, Katie, of Philadelphia; three great-grandchildren, Halle and Brandon Cox of Elysburg and Rachael Javorka of Wilkes-Barre; and one sister, Helen Farrell of RR5 Bloomsburg.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa and from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Numidia, where the funeral will follow at 3 with the Rev. Gordon Smith, Interim Pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Numidia.
